On Wednesday evening 11 October OASIS hosted this year's Inter-Office Quiz Night. 12 teams representing W T Dunbar & Sons, Lindsays, Turcan Connell, Standard Life, Burness Paull, Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland, St Cuthbert's, Fresh Start and the Church of Scotland Offices in George Street answered 8 sets of 10 questions ranging from “Tricky Trivia”, “Do you know your Scotland?”, “Who said that?”, to “Music”, “Sport” and General Knowledge.
The St Cuthbert's Minister, the Reverend Peter Sutton acted as Quizmaster and did a splendid job. Undoubtedly due to his Army background he had no difficulty in making his voice heard above all the laughter and chat. If the feedback is anything to go by it was a hugely successful evening.
This year's prizes were:
FIRST PRIZE: An outstanding gift from the Waldorf Astoria (Edinburgh – The Caledonian) of lunch for four inclusive of a bottle of selected Galvin Wine in the Galvin Brasserie De Luxe. The top team also had the additional honour of carrying off the OASIS Quaich.
SECOND PRIZE: Our very valued second prize was again kindly donated by W T Dunbar & Sons, and comprised 4 £50 vouchers for the Playhouse Theatre which can be used by each member of the team towards a show of their choice.
THIRD PRIZE: We are delighted to announce that John Lewis was supporting this event for a second time and had generously donated for each team member a Hotel Chocolate Bag and a bottle of Waitrose Cava Sparkling Wine.
BEST TEAM NAME: The team deemed to have thought up the most unusual and quirky team name each received a £10 M & S Voucher from funds kindly donated by Baillie Gifford to support business outreach work in the City Centre.
BOOBY PRIZE: Each member of this team received a box of M & S Liqueur Chocolates, also donated by Baillie Gifford.
The well deserving winners were honoured to have their prizes presented by Rev Madoda Mfene, Minister of Tiyo Soga Presbyterian Church, Langa, Cape Town, who is currently visiting Scotland from South Africa. The winners were:
FIRST PRIZE : The Standard Life Team Captained by Nigel Grey and including David Bell, Ian Johnstone and John Robertson. As long standing defending Champions, they also carried off and have by now, no doubt, returned the OASIS Quaich to the Standard Life Trophy Cabinet!
SECOND PRIZE : Work Place Chaplaincy Scotland . This was a wonderful achievement by this Team on its first appearance at the competition. The Team was captained by Andy Gregg, Workplace Chaplain to Edinburgh's City Centre, and his colleagues were: Catriona Parkinson, Liz Mackie and Graham Dann.
THIRD PRIZE: The Fresh Start team comprising Biddy Kelly, Joyce Juma-Phirri, Adrienne Mee and Brian Wilson. They had to face tie break questions to outsmart another one of their teams – a superb effort.
BEST TEAM NAME: Lindsays won this prize against stiff competition with their entry of “Could we have the prize for Best Team Name please?” Other good entries included: “Nice TC you, TC you, nice” from, of course, Turcan Connell and “Our Acronym Sends Instant Shivers”, the capital letters spelling out OASIS from, who else, WT Dunbar & Sons!
BOOBY PRIZE: W T Dunbar & Sons. There was a tie break for this prize also!
We acknowledge with huge thanks the wonderful prizes provided by the Waldorf Astoria - The Caledonian, W T Dunbar & Sons, John Lewis, and Baillie Gifford.
As the event organiser I am hugely indebted to the Rev. Peter Sutton for acting as Quizmaster, to Maggie Barrons and Jean Watt for their delicious catering, to the Church Officers for setting up the event and last, but not least, Thomas Parkinson, who assisted me in so many ways before the event and as a scorer during the event.
Finally, thanks to all who attended for supporting the event and for so generously donating towards the work done by Fresh Start to help the Homeless in Edinburgh. Just under £230 was raised on the evening which is fantastic.
Looking forward to seeing you all next year!
